due to a fear of spiders, a crippling and irrational fear of spiders, i haven't been able to put clothes on the floor for as long as I can remember. Chad does not have a fear of spiders which is good since he can kill spiders for me but bad because he doesn't realize how dangerous it is to leave clothes on the floor. everyone knows that spiders like to live under things you put on the ground!
despite the fact that i haven't seen a creature with more than four legs in our condo i still can't handle clothes on the floor. clearly i was severely traumatized as a child. i remember a specific instance of picking up a book I had placed open on the floor - before i learned that NOTHING on the floor was safe - and when I turned it up to start reading a giant spider scurried up the book and that was that. i spent the night not sleeping on the upstairs couch after thoroughly checking the cushions for spiders every hour.
so my own personal little hell is that the floor seems to double as Chad's closet.
we bought a bigger dresser to accommodate his GIANT collection of shirts, which helped, but I also attached hooks to the side of his dresser so he had somewhere to hang his clothes instead of just dropping them on the floor. the key was that it was close enough to his normal dropping zone that he might consider using the hooks.
so far no clothes to pick up off the floor and still no eight legged creatures (KNOCK ON WOOD). which means it's working for me :)
